He has a hard time interpreting what's reality and what's a dream. In his dreams Darnell wakes up in them and the dream he dreams are the exact things he did earlier that day in reality; almost deja vu but only it occurs in his dreams as a playback and most of the time twisted and demented. One day Darnell goes to see his psychiatrist, Dr. Klein, about his dreams and he talks to his shrink about how vivid they are and every time he thinks he's awake he is in fact in another dream that make him feel like it's him in real time going on about his day until some big event happen, most often something tragic happens and that's when he know he dreaming and he is able to fully awake.This struggle between reality and dreamland has driven him to unhealthy habits such as insomnia and alcohol abuse. Dr. Klein gives him advice on coping mechanisms and also positive diversions while he's awake. The shrink hands Darnell a journal and tells him to keep track of every dream he can remember and write them down with the time and date and also to video tape himself while he is sleeping. One day Darnell's family receives a phone call about a death in the family that was sure to trigger his psychotic episodes. Nikki advises Darnell that all the chaos would not be beneficial to his current therapy and Darnell agrees to stay behind while his family goes back to their hometown. Darnell drives his wife (Nikki) and their son (Little Darnell) off at the airport to attend a funeral and spend time with distant family. Darnell comes home and as he is in the process of writing vivid events from a recent dream he thinks he hears somebody downstairs in his house. He slowly gets up grab his gun from underneath the bed and goes down stairs to see what's going on but no one is there. Darnell realizes that he is having some hallucinations so he takes his medication for his schizophrenia and sleeping disorder washing the pills down with vodka from a bottle Nikki has hidden and he blacks out 30 minutes later.The same dream replays again only this time Darnell has shot someone but he's having double vision and can't see who it is. Darnell needs to know if this is reality or another false awakening.
